Private choppers needed to fight gorsefires if Aer Corps is delayed – Cope

first_imgDeputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has called for a change in protocol to the Aer Corps response to emergency situations. It follows a delay in scrambling personnel to tackle the recent wildfires in West Donegal. An official report into the delay found that a lack of crews on standby was the reason for the delay Now Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher wants a full rethink of the protocols surrounding the tasking of Aer Corps personnel in such situations. He said “I am calling on the Minister for Defence and An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to take personal charge of this situation as the line Minister of the Department of Defence and immediately put in place a programme for restoring numbers within the Aer Corp in order that these situations never arise again.“It will also be necessary in the future, even though it was not mentioned in the report that if delays of longer than one hour occur then the Department of Defence should be obliged to call in helicopters from the private sector; this was very successfully done by Donegal County Council in order to fight the recent fires.“Therefore, I am proposing that the current protocols are amended to facilitate the emergency drafting in of private helicopters. “It is critical once the alarm is raised by the local authority fire services that no time is wasted in getting a helicopter out to fight these wildfires otherwise we run the risks of serious fire damage and the potential loss of life.”He added that he accepts that procedures were fully followed in the initial raising of the alarm and that the Aer Corp immediately moved to assemble a crew.Unfortunately, there were no crews on call or on standby due to cuts in numbers of fully trained crews available to the Aer Corp at present. He adds that the report furnished to him directly references the call from assistance from Donegal Fire Officers; (on page two, contained in part 8 of report.)Teh report says “The request for helicopter fire support was actioned immediately on receipt in the Department of Defence from the National Directorate of Fire and Emergency Management (DHPLG). The Air Corps have confirmed that they moved immediately to assemble a crew. “This required pilots and crew with the necessary training on the use of the specialised firefighting equipment (bambi bucket). This took some time as some of the crew assembled from their time off, but was achieved as quickly as possible in the circumstances. ”He addes that in the conclusion of the Report which was compiled on foot of his public request for an explanation into the over 7-hour delay in getting helicopter cover to fight the wildfires, it expresses further concern. The report adds “In no way diminishing the concerns caused by the recent fire event, Defence Forces helicopter support was deployed as quickly as possible in the current circumstances for an “as available” capability.“The capability of the Air Corps is diminished with the loss of experienced personnel. The Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) and Garda Air Support Unit (GASU ) are prioritised. Every effort is being made to return to full capability and to manage risk. A return to capability will take some time.” Pat the Cope Gallagher added it is self-evident that the massive delays in mobilising of an aircrew to fight the wildfires in Donegal last April, was due to lack of an available call-up crew, as there was no standby crew on duty due to cuts in personnel numbers.Private choppers needed to fight gorsefires if Aer Corps is delayed – Cope was last modified: May 29th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Aer CorpshelicopterPat The Cope Gallagherreportlast_img read more

San Jose Sharks start to see what they can be

first_imgSAN JOSE — The Sharks have talked about the need to play a tighter, more physical brand of hockey since they were walloped in back-to-back games to start the regular season. After following that formula in two of their last three games this month, and seeing what kind of success it can bring, maybe those messages are finally hitting home. The Sharks allowed just 21 shots on net Tuesday, including eight in the first two periods, and snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the …last_img read more

PRRD holding contest for residents to make a catchy tune against invasive

first_imgDAWSON CREEK, B.C. — When most residents think of daisies, they might think of the tune “(S)he loves me, (s)he loves me not,” but the Peace River Regional District wants residents to come up with a new jingle showing just what a menace daisies really are, and is offering a reward for the catchiest tune. The PRRD says that daisies, specifically Oxeye Daisy and Scentless Chamomile, are a plague since they are an invasive species and not native to the Peace. The BC Weed Control Act says that the plants are considered regionally noxious, out-of-control perennials that are costly to eradicate and decrease the value of agricultural products.PRRD Communications Manager Fran Haughian says that the Regional District has put daisies at the top of its list of most wanted invasive species this year. Because of this, the Regional District has started a contest for residents to come up with the best jingle to use as propaganda against the invasive plants. Any submitted jingle must include the phrases: “Scentless Chamomile,” “Oxeye Daisy,” “Destroy daisies,” and “Hand pull, place in clear bags and toss into the landfill.” Submissions are encouraged to include all pr parts of: “The flowers can be identified by white petals and yellow centres,” “Pull-Bag-Toss the plant,” and “Free to dump PRRD transfer station.”Haughian said that the composer of the winning jingle will be awarded a $250 gift certificate at a local music store in Dawson Creek or Fort St. John. For more details and contest rules, visit the PRRD’s Destroy Daisies contest web page: https://prrd.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/engage/invasive-plant-jingle-contest/2018-1-23_-Daisy_Jingle-_Contest-Rules_FNL.pdflast_img read more

Ohio State on track heading into Jesse Owens Track Classic

He set three world records at the 1935 Big Ten track meet and holds four gold Olympic medals: one each in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, long jump, and 4×100 meter relay. In the past, Olympians such as John Drummond, Allen Johnson, Edwin Moses and Buckeye Olympians Diane Dixon and Joe Greene all competed in the Jesse Owens Track Classic according to an OSU press release. The Buckeyes are excited to return home after five weeks on the road, men’s coach Ed Beathea said. He said he believes the Buckeyes have gotten off to a steady start into the outdoor season, but are looking forward to competing hard this weekend as they transition into the next phase of the season.“I think that we are on track for where we would like to end the season,” Beathea said.Beathea is confident the team is on pace to face high competition.“Performances have been a bit of a mixed bag,” Beathea said. “Some guys have thrived and done well and some guys have done relatively average. But when I look at our results from last year, we are where we should be on how we train.”Senior sprinter and hurdler Justin Hines agreed with Beathea, saying the pace the Buckeyes have taken in their training during the outdoor season.“We usually start off a little slower, then pick it up a little,” Hines said. “Coach usually peaks us right before conference. We are at a good spot based on the marks we have right now and I think that if we keep moving forward, we will be very competitive in the conference meet.”Moving forward is one thing Beathea hopes to see his team do this weekend.“We are taking each week for what it is, but we understand that for our training, we need to get our legs back and turn over a little bit faster,” Beathea said. “I would like to see them fight a little more and compete with a stronger sense of urgency.”He said many athletes are still adjusting from the indoor to outdoor season. But with a few meets under their belts in the outdoor season, he hopes they will be “more spirited.”One athlete who intends to improve and compete harder is senior sprinter and hurdler Demoye Bogle.Bogle said he has had a “rough” couple of meets to start the outdoor season, but is being patient with his training. He hopes this weekend at home will help him get his confidence back.“We want to do our best and show that we can’t be beat at our own track,” Bogle said.Bogle said he and his teammates are continuing to practice hard each day and keep healthy in order to be successful this weekend. The home track advantage comes with bittersweet returns for Hines because this is his last race at home as a Buckeye. He said he is excited, however, to have his family and friends make it down to the meet.“The guys tend to enjoy being at home because they get more support,” Beathea said. “Mechanically (they) look the same, but there is a feeling of comfort of being at home.”The meet starts Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.Correction April 17: An earlier version of this story noted the athlete in the photo on the left to be Jackson Neff. In fact, it is Dominik Seitzer. The caption now reflects the correct individuals in the photo. read more

Thierry Henry looking for possibilities at Monaco

first_imgThe French football legend has been signed as the new manager of the poor-form French Ligue 1 club for the 2018-2019 seasonFormer Arsenal and France international footballer Thierry Henry was recently hired by Ligue 1 club Monaco. And the team is not doing so well.Monaco is currently sitting in the 18th position with only six points in nine matches.“You all know results are all that matter, but results are the consequence of what goes before,” he told a news conference as reported by Goal.PSG, Neymar, Ligue 1PSG ultras sent a warning letter to Neymar Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Brazilian superstar Neymar might play today his first game of the season for Paris Saint-Germain and the team’s ultras have warned him.“I don’t like to use the word ‘win’, but winning only happens if you have worked well.”“As long as there are enough points possible, [finishing in the top three] is possible,” he added.“It’s a long, hard job, but we’ll see what’s possible.”“Then [we have to work on] how to work when with the ball to have numerical superiority over the opposition, while retaining balance when in possession,” he commented.“You also need to be able to be flexible. The opposition may give you something you need to change so you may need to change at half-time. You might need to sit low, you might need to press, you might need two or three on the ball.”last_img read more

Jadon Sancho gets his first brace for Borussia Dortmund

first_imgBittersweet day for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, who scored the first ever brace with his club but wasn’t able to prevent a draw vs Herta Berlin.Young Jadon Sancho’s career keeps looking better and better for him at Borussia Dortmund, the teenager has now officially scored the first Bundesliga brace of his career against Herta Berlin on Saturday.Unfortunately for him, the match result gave him a bittersweet feeling in the end because he would’ve preferred to get a victory alongside his stellar performance. However, at such a young age and given how well his risky bet of leaving England has turned out for Jadon, a mild celebration is in order and there are some details that we have to go through about his performance.Sancho just took a very important spot in Bundesliga’s history after his brace, a milestone that only another foreign player has done better than him and we have a hunch that this is only the first of many memorable nights for the lad at Borussia Dortmund. The people at Bayern München must be very nervous right now, for they are going to have to struggle badly in order to beat the most in-form squad of European football that also happens to play in the same competition that they are this season.Disappointing result today but we will take the point and focus on our next game! The work continues!Nice to get 2 goals ⚽️⚽️ #JS7 pic.twitter.com/GmStsiHyLS— Jadon Sancho (@Sanchooo10) October 27, 2018Jadon Sancho scored his brace at the age of 18 years and 216 days, which turns him into the youngest Borussia Dortmund foreigner who has been able to achieve this in the Bundesliga’s history. But that’s not all, with this record, the English lad also ranked as the second foreigner of all the German clubs to get two goals in a single match. Before him, Hamburg’s Son Heung-min is still at the top spot after the brace he scored in his club’s defeat against Hannover at the age of 18 years and 135 days. The milestone that the South Korean player who today plays for Tottenham Hotspur, was reached back on 20 November 2010.This leaves Sancho with an incredible first impression that we believe won’t be the last we are going to hear from him this season, as all competitions are barely getting started and Borussia Dortmund has put together quite the competitive squad that is looking like it will cause a lot of problems for any other club in the continent.Bayern München will be the ones that will suffer from this vibrant Dortmund squad first hand as they compete in the same league, but we all know how Atletico Madrid already got a smashing defeat with a Jadon Sancho goal included.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.Sancho pic.twitter.com/TfHKA1woRM— canalbvb (@canalbvb) October 27, 2018As far as the player’s game development throughout the season, Sancho has a very peculiar style of play that he has already shown to the whole world. This is a player who has an instant reflex of quickly going on the attack to dribble any defender that is standing right in front of him, sometimes his pace looks a bit sloppy but he always manages to get past the obstacles, either with a pass or a skill demonstration that leaves anyone in awe.One could’ve predicted that Sancho was going to serve plenty of assists for his teammates this season, but his most recent matches have proven that he can also be that player who scores the goals and this leaves him as one of the most reliable players in European football today. In the 13 matches that Sancho has played so far in all competitions, the lad has already scored 4 goals and given 8 assists. These numbers mean that Jadon has already been directly involved in 12 goals out of all the games he’s played so far.He may have started the season on the bench at first, but his undisputed talent has convinced the manager that Sancho needs to start on every single match until the end of the season as long as he is fit.Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund this season:🅰️ Assist🅰️ Assist⚽️ Goal🅰️ Assist🅰️ Assist🅰️ Assist🅰️ Assist🅰️ Assist⚽️ Goal⚽️ Goal ⚽️ Goal⚽️ GoalRemember the name. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/6waxzqWjou— EPL Bible (@EPLBible) October 27, 2018What do you think about Jadon Sancho’s form in European football right now?
