38 ambulances delayed for over two hours at Letterkenny Hospital in September

first_imgAmbulance turnaround times at Letterkenny University Hospital are showing no signs of improvement, latest HSE figures have shown. In the month of September, a total of 766 ambulances were delayed for more than the 30-minute target set by the HSE.And amongst the worst is Letterkenny. The figures show that 38 ambulances were unable to get back into service for between two and four hours because a patient could not be admitted due to overcrowding. The startling figures come after another week of frustration for the hospital. An inquest into the death of local woman Margaret Callaghan showed she had to wait 71 minutes for an ambulance to travel just 2kms to her house at Mountain Top in January, 2018.Two ambulances had been backed up at the hospital for over six hours and four hours respectively. The late Margaret CallaghanWhen an ambulance did arrive at her home she had just passed away. The Medical Director of the National Ambulance Service, Professor Cathal O Domhnaill said the situation was simply getting worse. He blamed capacity issues at the hospital saying that it was like pouring a pint of liquid into a half-pint glass.General manager of the hospital, Mr Sean Murphy, also painted a bleak picture of the hospital. He revealed that this year the full capacity protocol has been in operation at the hospital for 94% of the time. The revelations at the inquest led coroner Dr Denis McCauley to appeal to the HSE to review its protocols for turnaround times around the country.38 ambulances delayed for over two hours at Letterkenny Hospital in September was last modified: December 8th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:ambualncedonegalHSEluhturnaround timeslast_img read more

So you think we’ve got problems

first_img31 January 2008With the recent wave of power cuts and state company Eskom’s acknowledgement that we are in for a rough ride, it’s not surprising that, in the minds of many journalists, “the alarm bells are ringing” over South Africa’s ability to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup.The power crisis is one of numerous issues that will continue to make headlines in the build-up to 2010. So let’s pause for a moment and reflect on some of the hurdles previous World Cup hosts had to face. Argentina staged the 1978 tournament under a military dictatorship. Four years later, tensions between that country and England over the Falklands War threatened to disrupt the tournament in Spain.Eight months before the 1986 tournament in Mexico, Mexico City was nearly flattened by a massive earthquake which left 100 000 people buried. The 1990 World Cup in Italy saw the dark side of football played out on centre stage. It generated a record-low goals-per-game average and (at the time) a record 16 red cards, which subsequently saw sweeping changes to the rules of the game.In 1994, the US had to overcome enormous spectator apathy to set the record for the highest spectator attendance figures in World Cup history. On the eve of the 1998 tournament, France was hit by a major transport strike. Air France was only able to honour 25% of its flights, affecting all of its short, medium and long haul routes.2002 saw the logistical nightmare of hosting this mega-tournament in two countries, Japan and South Korea, for the first time. “Never again,” said Fifa. And the previous hosts, Germany, overcame enormous challenges – including the (very real) threat of terrorism and hooliganism – to stage what was widely regarded as the most successful World Cup so far. This is not to downplay the challenges South Africa faces in the lead-up to 2010; just to put them in a different light, and so perhaps to calm those jangling bells a bit.Urquhart is a former Fifa World Cup media officer and the current editor of Project 2010last_img read more

6 Great Approaches to Public Speaking

first_imgRelated Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… If you want to be a great public speaker, your preparation has to be more than just blasting gangsta rap and shadow boxing in front of the mirror. Whether you have to videotape yourself speaking, join a presentation club, or rewrite your PowerPoint deck 40 times, it’s important to be able to tell your own story. Few of us are born with the gift of public speaking but with a little preparation we can learn to persuade, sell and inspire. 1. How Not to Suck at a Group Presentation: LA-based investor Mark Suster teaches startup companies how to present on stage with some great suggestions. In addition to excellent points on structure and the importance of practice, he suggests entrepreneurs join Toastmasters or take an acting class to become more comfortable in front of an audience. 2. 10/20/30: Guy Kawasaki wrote the 10/20/30 rule where presenters create a PowerPoint of no more than ten slides, in a 20 minute time frame, with a minimum font size of 30. While Kawasaki’s rules are meant for VC presentations, the fact that each slide has a purpose and covers only key points can carry over to larger presentations. 3. How to Present While People are Twittering: Presentation trainer Olivia Mitchell has a great guest post on Laura Fitton’s Pistachio blog where she teaches presenters to incorporate Twitter and feedback loops into their presentations. Although this adds a layer of complication to the presentation experience, it does have the advantage of offering cues to the speaker in addition to creating a long tail of social media pointing back to your words. You can download Mitchell’s book entitled, “How to present with Twitter (and other backchannels)” here. 4. Uncovering Steve Jobs’ Presentation Secrets: BusinessWeek columnist Carmine Gallo wrote a great article dissecting Steve Jobs’ MacBook Air presentation. What I find interesting about this advice is the fact that Gallo points out that part of the Apple narrative requires a binary opposition or an “us versus them” scenario. Gallo writes “in every classic story, the hero fights the villain.” If you as a startup founder can position yourself as fixing an industry evil or vanquishing a lackluster market leader, then you’re more likely to have a compelling story. 5. The Lessig Method: Upon first arriving in San Francisco I had the pleasure of seeing lawyer and activist Lawrence Lessig speak on copyright and remix culture. In echoing David Hornik’s post, we cannot agree more with the statement that Lessig’s presentations are a “fantastic combination of content, art and brand.” The former Stanford professor weaves a narrative of higher purpose while his staccato imagery injects a freshness into what is often considered dry subject matter. Presentation Zen offers a great breakdown of the many methods inspired by Dr. Lessig’s style. 6. Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces: This may seem like an abstract resource, but reading about archetypes is a great way to learn the components of a great story. It is well-documented that George Lucas’ Star Wars was heaving influenced by Campbell’s work. Luke Skywalker went on an epic journey, was mentored by Obi Wan, overcame Darth Vader and returned with control of the force. Which of your mentors is your Obi Wan? What is your greatest obstacle? And what is the skill or lesson you’ve learned in starting this company?
