No rush: Without a clear-cut starter after preseason camp, Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone will weigh his options at running back during the season

first_imgSyracuse started training camp with five players competing for the running back spot. As training camp progressed, no running back separated himself from the group.Jerome Smith, Prince-Tyson Gulley, Adonis Ameen-Moore, George Morris III and Ashton Broyld were all in the mix. With only days left in camp, the Orange coaches moved safety Devante MacFarlane to running back to see if he could earn the starting job.But head coach Doug Marrone said at the end of camp that none of the backs emerged as the team’s primary option.“No, I wouldn’t right now say, ‘Hey, here’s the guy we’re going to give the ball 30 times to. I would not say that right now today,” Marrone said. “That may change in the next couple of days but right now you’ll see a couple of guys. We’re discussing exactly who they are.”Smith is listed as the starter for SU’s season opener against Northwestern. Marrone said the decision came down to his prior game experience and his performance in camp. Still, each back remains in the discussion to see time throughout the season.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textPrince-Tyson GulleyHeight: 5-10Weight: 192Class: JuniorHometown: Akron, OhioPrince-Tyson Gulley started last season second on the depth chart behind Antwon Bailey. Gulley showed promise in Syracuse’s fourth game of the season, rushing for 70 yards on 10 carries — both career highs. But Gulley suffered a broken collarbone after the game and was out for the final eight games of the season.“I’m just looking to finish where I left off and keep it going,” Gulley said.Gulley returns in 2012 as part of a crowded backfield fighting for time. He worked back from his injury and got back on the field during the summer, using the time to regain his strength. As a freshman, Gulley played in 10 games and ran for 74 yards on 13 carries. He also served as the Orange’s primary kick returner, taking 29 kickoffs for 633 yards. The shifty running back said he’s looking forward to seeing the unit improve heading into the season.Motivated by his injury-shortened 2011 season, he’s ready to make something happen when his name’s called.“Just patience and focus — that’s all I’ve been thinking about, man,” Gulley said. “When it’s my time, make sure I can make a play and put myself in the best position to make big plays.”Adonis Ameen-MooreHeight: 5-11Weight: 229Class: SophomoreHometown: Denver, Colo.Adonis Ameen-Moore shed 15 pounds during the offseason and enters the season at 229. Marrone said during camp he was happy to see Ameen-Moore’s hard work had paid off.The sophomore only saw the field in four games his first season, rushing for 40 yards. This season may be tough for him to break into the rotation, but he said the fierce competition will only benefit him.“Every day, I just go out there and try to do my best,” Ameen-Moore said. “Just try to show the coaches I can help win games, hopefully.”Ameen-Moore enjoyed a decorated high school career, earning all-state and All-American honors at Mullen High School in Colorado. He rushed for 1,774 yards and 26 touchdowns his senior season and led his team to three state titles. The highlight for Ameen-Moore in 2011 came against West Virginia when he gained 19 yards on five carries. After working hard in the offseason to reshape his body, he finds himself with an opportunity to earn more time in an unsettled situation at his position.“We’re all competing, trying to get a job. So we’re all going to go out there and compete hard, and we’re going to practice even harder,” Ameen-Moore said, “because when we see somebody else do good, like ‘OK, I got to top that.’”Devante McFarlaneHeight: 6-0Weight: 194Class: FreshmanHometown: Wheatley Heights, N.Y.Devante McFarlane was a late addition to the battle for time at running back. In the final week of camp, Marrone moved the freshman from safety to running back.“When the situation came up of the running back situation where no one was really taking it,” Marrone said, “we just moved Devante over there, and he’s done a nice job.”McFarlane played running back at Half Hollow Hills West High School, where he was a first-team all-state selection and rushed for 754 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. Marrone said he wavered back and forth on where to play McFarlane when he arrived at SU. He saw a big, strong, fast kid who could develop into a safety or even grow into a linebacker.Marrone said that after just two days at the position, McFarlane was in the mix to see time when the season begins.Jerome SmithHeight: 6-0Weight: 226Class: JuniorHometown: Bear, Del.Jerome Smith was listed first on Syracuse’s preseason depth chart, though the competition for the starting running back spot was ongoing through training camp. When camp ended, none of the running backs created any separation, including Smith.Last season, Smith was Antwon Bailey’s primary backup and rushed for 139 yards on 37 carries, scoring one touchdown. Smith knows about the lineage of his position. Syracuse has had a 1,000-yard rusher for the past four seasons, but Smith isn’t focused too much on that number. The only number he cares about right now is the one that sits in the Orange’s win column.“You set personal goals, but all those goals don’t mean anything if you don’t win games,” Smith said. “I’d rather have a lot of wins. I’m not going to lie.”Though Smith’s playing time at SU has been limited, he put up impressive numbers the last time he was a starter, which came during his senior year of high school at Pencader Charter in Delaware. He ran for 1,334 yards and 16 touchdowns on 193 carries. He has the ability to make the big plays Syracuse is looking for, but Smith said as long as everyone fulfills their responsibilities, big plays will happen.“Our biggest thing is just everybody doing your job,” Smith said. “If you do your job, big plays are going to come.”Ashton BroyldHeight: 6-4Weight: 229Class: FreshmanHometown: Rochester, N.Y.A quarterback throughout high school, Ashton Broyld worked primarily with the running backs in training camp. The Syracuse coaches want to get him on the field as soon as possible, so having him line up in the backfield is likely the best way to do that.Broyld was a dual-threat quarterback who spent a lot of time playing in a spread offense, so he’s shown he’s dangerous with his legs and will continue to showcase his rushing skills with the Orange. As a senior at Rush-Henrietta High School, Broyld rushed for 1,540 yards and 24 touchdowns. That’s in addition to throwing for 1,961 yards and 24 scores. For at least this season, Broyld won’t be beating defenses with his arm but with his legs instead. While he’s vying for a running back spot, he could also be used in the slot and will take direct snaps in a wildcat formation.“The physical part isn’t the hard part. It’s more of a mental and learning the plays and doing the little things right,” Broyld said. “I’m just trying to get better every day.”The balance for offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, though, has been not overloading him with too much information. Broyld has learned the system little by little and said he understands it better each day.Wherever he lines up, the Orange is simply excited to see him on the field.“Ashton right now has shown that he’s a darn good football player. The key is going to be he’s still a freshman,” Hackett said. I’m very excited to give him enough so he can showcase what he can do but not overload him to hurt him being a freshman.”George Morris IIIHeight: 6-0Weight: 191Class: FreshmanHometown: Lawrenceville, Ga.In the competition for the starting running back spot, George Morris isn’t in the lead and probably won’t see much time on the field as a freshman. As a senior at Central Gwinnett High School in Georgia, Morris rushed for 1,045 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has speed and has impressed the Syracuse coaching staff but was listed sixth on the preseason depth chart.Still, since none of the tailbacks separated themselves from the rest of the group in training camp, it isn’t out of the question that Morris will play a minor role this season. The depth at the running back position is something offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said is something he’s happy to have. Morris is among the backs he’s excited about and brings skills that could become valuable over the course of the season.“Our depth at that position, it’s exciting,” Hackett said. “It allows you to really mix it up, but you can keep it simple. And you can throw a lot of different guys. It puts a lot of stress on the defense.”—Compiled by The Daily Orange Sports staff, [email protected] Comments Published on August 30, 2012 at 3:44 am Related Stories Hidden wounds: After a slew of unpublicized injuries derailed Syracuse last year, the program makes adjustments to stay healthy in 2012Multiple fronts: Ashton Broyld gives Syracuse a new offensive weapon who can attack defenses from a variety of positionsIn the clear: Marcus Sales enters the 2012 season refocused and rededicated to football following his season-long suspension’The new Temple’: Coming off a 9-4 season and bowl victory, the Owls are looking to prove they’re here to stay in their second go-around in the Big EastBack on the warpath: Florida State poised to return to championship discussion behind swarming defensecenter_img Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

first_imgBlatter faces judgement by FIFA ethics court ZURICH (AP): In the waning days of his presidency, Sepp Blatter attempted to save his job yesterday at the FIFA ethics committee that he helped create and whose authority he does not recognise in his case. The suspended FIFA president had been expected to tell four judges that he is innocent of wrongdoing during the hearing at the headquarters of soccer’s governing body, the first time Blatter has entered the building since he was banned for 90 days in October. “Blatter looks forward to a decision in his favour because the evidence requires it,” Blatter’s lawyer, Richard Cullen, said in a statement after the hearing. “The evidence demonstrates that president Blatter behaved properly and certainly did not violate FIFA’s Code of Ethics. This investigation should be closed and the suspension lifted.” With a large bandage on his face, Blatter arrived at FIFA headquarters shortly after 8 a.m. local time in a chauffeur-driven car for a hearing that was scheduled to start at 9 a.m. A spokesman for Blatter, Thomas Renggli, said the Swiss official has had a minor procedure to treat a skin problem on his right cheek. At 5 p.m., Blatter and lead lawyer Lorenz Erni drove away from the building without making any comment. Suarez hat-trick sends Barcelona into final YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP): Luis Suarez made up for the absence of a sick Lionel Messi and injured Neymar, scoring a hat-trick on Thursday as Barcelona beat Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 to advance to the final of the Club World Cup. Suarez put Barcelona ahead just before half-time, hammering in a rebound off Ivan Rakitic’s long-range effort that was parried by Guangzhou goalkeeper Li Shuai. The striker made it 2-0 five minutes after the break when he controlled a pass from Andres Iniesta off his chest and beat Li with a right-footed volley. He put the result beyond doubt with a penalty kick after Huang Bowen took down Munir El Haddadi in the area. Barcelona will face South American champions River Plate in the final on Sunday. Ukrainian club Dnipro faces European ban NYON, Switzerland (AP): UEFA says Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, last season’s Europa League runner-up, faces being banned from playing in Europe unless $1.9 million in overdue payments are settled by next month. The Ukrainian club owes $910,000 to other clubs and $980,000 to staff. Dnipro have until January 31 to make the payments or UEFA will ban the club from the next European competition that they qualify for in the next three seasons. The club has been affected by the political and economic turbulence that has rocked Ukraine.last_img read more

Takeaways: Sharks lines are finally falling into place

first_imgSAN JOSE — Trap averted. The Sharks (24-13-7) showdown with the Los Angeles Kings (17-24-3) had all the ingredients to be a classic letdown game. The game came on the heels of an emotional win over the NHL’s top team where the Sharks played without three starting defensemen. The Kings entered the game ranked 15th in the Western Conference, an easy opponent to look past. Leaks Reveal HTC’s New Weapon Against Samsung, Apple Ahead Of Launch

first_imgdan rowinski What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Related Posts Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagementcenter_img Tags:#Android#HTC HTC is readying its war machine for its first biggest device launch of the year. Codenamed the HTC M7, the device is expected to be announced at a launch event next Tuesday, February 19th in New York City. We already have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The M7 is likely to be called the HTC One in the United States. According to gadget blog HTC Source, it will be released to AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile on March 22nd according to anonymous contacts. It will retail for $199 with a two-year contract. The HTC One?From professional gadget leaker @evleaks at UnwiredView.com, we have an idea of what the HTC M7/One is supposed to look like as well (pictured right). It will have a 4.7-inch screen with a 1.7-GHz quad-core processor and come in black and white variations. HTC is also likely to perform a significant upgrade to its “Sense” skin that it overlays on top of stock Android to differentiate itself from the likes of Samsung or Google’s Nexus devices. In the life of HTC, this will be an important device launch. The HTC M7/One may be its last shot to claim market share in the elite smartphone sector in the developed regions of the U.S. and Western Europe. If the One breaks on the shores of the regions that have been fortified by the likes of Apple and Samsung, HTC will likely have to retreat into creating low-margin devices in developing markets such as China and India and the Pacific rim. Commenting on the company’s last quarterly earnings statement, HTC CEO Peter Chou said that the smartphone manufacturer is already making plans to be more aggressive in developing markets. That strategy will work to grease the wheels of HTC revenue (if it can successfully fight off the likes of Huawei and ZTE) but for HTC to truly regain prominence, it needs to make a strong showing with top-of-the-line devices in the U.S and Europe. If HTC Source’s contacts are to be believed, the first of the company’s major problems that affected its market share in 2012 will be addressed with the launch of the One. Distribution and exclusivity damned HTC’s One X, Droid DNA and One X+ to marginal players among the top U.S. carriers last year. This time around it looks like HTC has managed to strike deals with three of the top four carriers to release the One on March 22, with Verizon releasing at least a version of the device at a later date, according to @evleaks.In addition to the reported specs listed above, what we know about the M7 at this point is that it will have two front-facing speakers, the upgrade to Sense and possibly a four “ultrapixel” camera. We still do not really know what an ultrapixel is, but HTC seems confident that the new camera on the M7/One will be one of the best in the industry. We will be live at the HTC launch event in Manhattan next week. 3 Low-light Cameras For Every Budget Range

first_imgHigh Budget: Canon ME20F-SHVery recently, Canon announced a brand new full-frame camera that’s capable of shooting up to 4 million ISO. This option will certainly blow any other low-light camera out of the water, but it comes at a price – $30,000. At the top end of the pricing structure, this camera will likely find its home in rental houses, as its modular design and lack of internal recording makes it less than ideal for every day shooting.Canon’s New 4 Million+ ISO Camera Is Amazingly Impractical – PremiumBeatNew Canon Full-Frame 35mm Camera Sees in the Dark with 4 Million Max ISO – No Film SchoolCanon ME20F-SH Press Release – Canon Got any hot opinions on any of the low-light cameras discussed above? High-sensitivity cameras that can shoot in ultra low light are more popular than ever. These three low-light cameras will have you covered, regardless of the size of your budget.Generally, I’m not a fan of shooting without lighting and bumping your ISO up like crazy (no matter how clean your camera may be). That said, there are definitely scenarios where you need to push things further than usual. Thankfully, technology has progressed over the last few years, and several cameras have emerged that allow you to capture fantastic images without traditional lighting setups.Low Budget: Sony a7SThe Sony a7S isn’t the cheapest camera around, though it’s relatively affordable coming in at around $2500. If you’re aiming to shoot in the dark, but still require the practicality and affordability of a DSLR style camera, the a7S is the way to go. That said, if you’re in the market for the a7S, you may want to consider holding off until the a7S Mark II is released, which will likely allow you to record 4K internally. Quebec parents seek class action against makers of addictive Fortnite game

first_imgMONTREAL — A Quebec law firm is seeking authorization to launch a class action lawsuit against the makers of the Fortnite video game, alleging it is highly addictive and can cause health problems.Montreal-based Calex Legal is seeking to sue Epic Games Inc., the U.S. company behind the popular online video game, as well as its Canadian affiliate based in British Columbia. The filing is on behalf of two plaintiffs — parents of Quebec children who are 10 and 15.The children are described as highly dependent on the Fortnite video game and the parents say, had they known, they would have prevented them from downloading the game or monitored their activities more closely. The filing adds there are real physical, mental and social consequences for those who are addicted to the game. The request for authorization, filed Thursday with Quebec Superior Court, has not been approved by the court, and a spokesperson for Epic Games was not immediately available for comment. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 4, 2019.The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Football Signing Day 2017 is one for the record books with five

OSU coach Urban Meyer smiles during his press conference on National Signing Day on Feb. 1, 2017. Credit: Colin Hass-Hill | Assistant Sports DirectorOhio State coach Urban Meyer has championed recruiting. The Buckeye program has been known for recruiting and receiving commits from the state’s top football talents. Meyer, however, has done that and taken the program to new heights in recruiting across the country. His second-ranked 2017 class is a perfect example with the most out-of-state signees since he joined OSU.Eight of OSU’s nine early-enrollees were available to the media on Wednesday after team workouts. Here are three stories from National Signing Day.Meyer’s best class adds MunfordFive five-star, 14 four-star and two three-star recruits make up what many consider to be Meyer’s greatest recruiting class not just at OSU, but in his entire coaching career. The class had the most five-star signees in Meyer’s time at OSU. Twelve of the 21 new Buckeyes are ranked in the top five of their respective positions. The Buckeyes became richer on Wednesday with the addition of four-star offensive tackle Thayer Munford. The 21 players in the 2017 class are the fewest Meyer has ever had, but there’s reason for celebrating given the talent he brought in from across the nation, including the state of Texas. However, only 33 percent of the class came from the state of Ohio, which is not enough, Meyer said.“50 percent is kind of the mark that I’ve been trying to (meet). I keep it right in front of me and I stare at it and make sure that we’re doing right,” Meyer said. “I’m glad it worked out with Thayer. We had another spot saved if we wanted to go after an Ohio guy and it just didn’t materialize.”There were no surprises for OSU on Signing Day. Munford actually committed to the Buckeyes a couple days before, Meyer said. OSU targets Marvin Wilson and Jay Tufele signed with Florida State and University of Southern California, respectively. Now with 90 players on scholarship, counting sophomore punter Drue Chrisman who paid his own way in 2016, the Buckeyes have to cut down to 85 players by fall camp.Defensive backs readyThe OSU defensive back class is second to none. And that’s a good thing. With the early departures of cornerbacks Gareon Conley, Marshon Lattimore and safety Malik Hooker to the NFL draft, OSU had to replace its three key members in the secondary. However, Meyer is confident that the recruits in the secondary will help immediately.Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade are the top two cornerbacks of the 2017 class and both could see the field immediately. Those two, cornerback Marcus Williamson and safety Isaiah Pryor enrolled early to get a leg up on the open positions.Wade was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. He and Okudah are taller than most cornerbacks in college, both at 6-foot-1, but have a similar size to former OSU cornerbacks Lattimore and Conley, who will all be in the NFL next season.“I know a spot is open,” Okudah said. “It’s all about competition and I know the best two corners will get on that field. It’s just whatever I make of it.”Wade and Okudah are in the running to start alongside junior cornerback Denzel Ward, who will likely have one of the starting positions in 2017. But the No. 1 junior college cornerback signee Kendall Sheffield has already had the college experience at Alabama, which qualifies him for the starting job.Brendon White’s positionOne of the few Ohio players in this class is Brendon White. He doesn’t have a true position right now, but is arguably the most versatile player in the class. His position is designated “athlete,” but he thinks of himself as a receiver.Meyer told White this offseason that the unexpected early departure of wide receiver Noah Brown left a spot for White. He has been playing on both sides of the ball in workouts and said he likes the comparisons of Darron Lee at linebacker and Michael Thomas at receiver.“It definitely helps (being versatile) because it helps coaches know that I can play different positions,” White said. “If I struggle at wide receiver, I can go to linebacker. If I struggle at linebacker, I can go to safety.”On top of that, White has deep ties in his family to OSU and expressed his interest of becoming a captain in his time at OSU. He has started to do that within the freshman class having been with the team during bowl practice.“When they first got here and the first move-in day was Jan. 9, I told them this warm-up they were about to do was going to be hard,” White said. “After the end of the warm-up, they thought that was our workout and so I was like, ‘We got way more than this.’ We’re doing better now.” read more

Medina – September 14, 2019 Brazilian superstar Neymar might play today his first game of the season for Paris Saint-Germain and the team’s ultras have warned him.“I don’t like to use the word ‘win’, but winning only happens if you have worked well.”“As long as there are enough points possible, [finishing in the top three] is possible,” he added.“It’s a long, hard job, but we’ll see what’s possible.”“Then [we have to work on] how to work when with the ball to have numerical superiority over the opposition, while retaining balance when in possession,” he commented.“You also need to be able to be flexible.
