EG Group, a British retailer operating petrol stations and food outlets, has agreed to acquire a network of 285 petrol station forecourts in Southern Germany from OMV Deutschland for €485m.Primarily located in the Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg regions, the portfolio of petrol stations will expand EG’s presence in Germany. As part of the deal, EG will also inherit the existing fuel supply agreements from OMV. EG is already operating several sites under the ESSO fuel brand in the country.OMV is an integrated oil, gas and petrochemicals company headquartered in Vienna, Austria. As per the company, the 285 petrol stations have only very limited degree of integration with its refinery in Germany, as it is specialises in petrochemicals production. The company claims to be committed to its remaining operations in Germany focused on its highly integrated petrochemicals operations in the Burghausen refinery.EG Group co-Founder and co-CEO Zuber Issa said: “We are very pleased to have reached an agreement to acquire the OMV retail business in Germany. The acquisition is an exciting opportunity for us to expand EG Group’s footprint in Germany, a key European market where we see significant growth potential.“We look forward to integrating the business into our broader portfolio and further strengthening it through our expertise in Grocery & Merchandise and Foodservice.”EG to assume certain outstanding lease liabilitiesThe purchase price of €485m is subject to customary net working capital and net debt adjustments and is being funded from EG’s existing cash reserves. The company has also agreed to assume certain outstanding lease liabilities, taking the total enterprise value of the transaction to €614m.Subject to regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to close next year.OMV executive board chairman and CEO Rainer Seele said: “We are delighted about the level of interest in our filling station business in Germany and to have reached an agreement with EG Group.“This marks a further step in our previously announced 2-billion-Euro divestment program and this transaction will reduce OMV’s debt by approximately half a billion euros at the time of closing.”In September, Austrian electricity provider VERBUND has agreed to acquire a 51% stake in the natural gas transmission company Gas Connect Austria from OMV for €271m ($316.6m). As part of the transaction, EG will also inherit the existing fuel supply agreements from OMVlast_img read more

Syracuse freshman shine in team’s loss to Notre Dame on Senior Day

first_img Published on April 20, 2014 at 8:20 pm Contact Ryan: [email protected] While Syracuse spent an extended amount of time honoring its outgoing seniors on Senior Day, it was the youngest players who took the spotlight, bringing home the only wins on the day for the Orange.Freshmen Maria Avgerinos and Rhiann Newborn both came back from a set down to win their matches in three tight sets. Freshman Valeria Salazar won a singles match, and also beat the No. 10 doubles team in the country with her partner Maddie Kobelt. Even though No. 69 SU (5-14, 5-9 Atlantic Coast) lost the overall match 4-3 to No. 24 Notre Dame (15-8, 8-6), it was still special for the three of them to win alongside their best friends.“Very special for us three,” Avgerinos said. “We’re coming in as freshmen, it’s our first season. It feels so nice to end the season with a win, especially with my two really good friends on the team. Just really special.”While both Avgerinos and Newborn had to battle back to win their matches, Avgerinos had to dig the deepest as she stared down match point. She had lost the first set 6-4 and faced a match point at a 5-2 deficit in the second set. As Avgerinos struggled, she could not help but notice her excitable friend Newborn fist bumping and yelling out “Come on!” almost every other point on the court right next to her.AdvertisementThis is placeholder text“I was watching her, and she was really intense and fired up,” Avgerinos said. “She was just moving so well, and I was like ‘I probably should start moving a little better.’ She inspired me on the court today to move better and be more aggressive.”Avgerinos eventually was able to battle all the way back from that 5-2 deficit she faced to steal the second set 7-6, and she went on to win the third 6-4.That excitability that helped pump up Avgerinos has been a part of Newborn since she first started playing tennis, she said. It fits with her game style, as she seems to be looking to hit a winner every shot. This can lead to her having a run of unforced errors, but also to a run of spectacular shots.“If I hit a good shot I’m going to yell because that pumps me up,” Newborn said. “That just gets me ready for the next point.”Although Newborn and Avgerinos both impressed in their comebacks, it was their teammate Salazar who had the most impressive day and weekend.Against the No. 10 doubles team in the country, Salazar and Kobelt had a break point opportunity at 6-6. Salazar traded hard groundstrokes back and forth with her opponent until finding an opportunity to hit a soft put-away volley into the short corner of the court.Salazar was coming off a 6-0, 6-0 win against Wake Forest the day before. She said the confidence she gained from that match carried over to her success against Notre Dame.“I just play to win,” Salazar said. “Yesterday gave me so much confidence. I just played really well out there today.”Even though interim head coach Shelley George did not get the final outcome she wanted against Notre Dame, she was pleased at what the results might mean for this team in the future.“I think there’s a lot of promise for the future,” George said. “These guys have grown up under fire this season. They’ve had to step up in roles because of some injuries. They just keep getting better and better from match to match.” Comments Facebook Twitter Google+last_img read more

Teens take control of their moolah

This Sunday, 13 May, 15 000 high school pupils from all over South Africa will be doing going to the movies not only for pleasure, but also to learn vital lessons for their future financial wellbeing.A new movie called Smartbucks mind your moolah has been released by Stanlib, one of South Africa’s leading investment managers. The aim is to teach pupils about financial literacy, an important element of life skills that is lacking in the current school curriculum, according to the company.Stanlib felt this could be done in a fun, exciting way that young people would enjoy and relate to.“Each year, over 550 000 pupils write matric exams and go on to enter the labour market without an education in basic financial skills such as saving and investing,” CEO Thabo Dloti said.Comedy meets serious businessThe locally produced movie is 60 minutes long and stars comedians Toll Ass Mo and Mpho ‘Pops’ Modikoane, who was runner-up in the hit reality TV series So You Think you’re Funny in 2009. Popular Isidingo actor Darlington Michaels also graces the screen. The film follows the story of two young up-and-coming rap artists whose lives are complicated by a loan shark demanding money that they borrowed from him. They have to avoid him at all costs while they try to raise this money, getting caught up in a few sticky situations in the process.Interlaced into this angle of the story is an insightful interview between an accredited financial educator and the character played by Toll Ass Mo, on the different aspects of personal finance.Changing attitudes towards moneyThe movie will be screened simultaneously every Sunday until 10 June at major Ster-Kinekor movie theatres in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.The project’s ambassadors, popular 5fm presenter Gareth Cliff and TV personality Fikile Moeti, will also interact with the pupils at some of the screenings to get feedback from them as well as to answer questions arising from the movie.Dloti said while Smartbucks will educate pupils about spending, the Stanlib staff also hope it will change their attitude towards money.“We want this initiative to grow and develop for years to come, which is why we have partnered with the Department of Basic Education, Primestars and other institutions.”Not saving enoughStanlib chief economist Kevin Lings said while South Africa has one of the most developed financial services industries in the world, the country’s savings rate is alarmingly low when compared to other emerging economies.China’s savings rate, for instance, constitutes about 50.6% of the country’s GDP, while South Africa’s savings levels are at a mere 14.7%.“South African household debt has risen by almost R900-billion in the past 10 years, or at an annual average rate of over 14% per year,” said Lings. In contrast, household income has risen by 10.5% per year over the same time, which means that households have lived beyond their means for the past 10 years, he said.Financial grounding at a young ageMartin Sweet, MD of Primestars Marketing, echoed Lings’s statements on household debt and living standards.“The problem stems from insufficient financial grounding at a young, impressionable age,” he said.“Research indicates that few school leavers are able to properly plan and manage their finances and most are unsure about how to use financial resources when they enter the labour market.”The ratio of household debt to household income has increased from around 52% 10 years ago to 75% at present.“Fortunately, interest rates have fallen to their lowest level since 1974, which means that the interest cost of servicing debt has eased,” said Lings.“But the increased cost of electricity, transport, food, education and medical services combined with the current low level of personal savings means that households are now especially vulnerable to any further economic shock.”Four elements of financial literacyThe Smartbucks programme identifies and educates on four elements of financial literacy: saving, budgeting, debt management and investing.“Financial intelligence is not about how much money people make. It is about how much money they keep and how hard their money works for them,” said Sweet.Experimenting with an entertainment tool such as a movie in a theatre setting creates room for fun, along with learning.“Qualitative research has indicated that participants find this learning environment very stimulating and as a result, concentration and message retention are improved,” said Sweet.last_img read more

Opera 10.50: A Browser Worth Switching To?

first_imgSpeed and FeaturesNew Features:private browsingsupport for HTML5 and CSS3better integration with native systemsnotification messages are now non-modalimprovements to the search box and the address boxnew and improved highlightingnew in-line page search and password managernew and improved user interface designWith this new version, Opera introduces new features, as well as a new JavaScript engine (Carakan) and an improved rendering engine (Presto 2.5). In our own informal tests, Opera managed to best both the latest releases of Chrome and Firefox. For users, however, these artificial benchmarks are only a small part of the user experience and the speed difference between most modern browsers is relatively negligible compared to other bottlenecks in the rendering process. New features, besides the updated user interface, include better integration with Windows 7 and Vista, an enhanced private browsing mode, visual tabs and improved support for CSS3 and HTML5. Opera now also features an Office 2007-like menu button that replaces the standard menu bar and packs all of the program’s settings and options into a more compact interface.Just like earlier versions, Opera 10.50 also includes a built-in mail and RSS client, as well as Opera Turbo for faster surfing on slow networks, Opera Unite (an integrated web-servers – see our full review here) and Opera Link, which allows you to synchronize bookmarks, preferences and notes between different machines that use Opera.VerdictWithout doubt, the biggest draw of Opera 10.50 is its speed, however. The browser feels extremely snappy, though in our tests, Opera 10.50 also used quite a bit of memory. The Opera team also worked hard on improving the user interface, which is now a lot cleaner. So is this a browser worth switching for? In terms of features, it definitely bests every other major browser on the market, but the absence of a thriving extension and plugin ecosystem will surely hold a lot of people back from even giving it a try. If you are not bound to a certain Firefox or Chrome plugin, however – or if you are using Internet Explorer – Opera 10.50 is definitely worth a try. The browser wars are back with a vengeance. In no small part thanks to the efforts of Google Chrome, we have seen a resurgence in browser inovation and a new emphasis on speed over the last year and a half. Today, Opera is launching its newest weapon against Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Billed as the “world’s fastest browser,” Opera 10.50 for Windows – which also sports a new user interface – might just be Opera’s best browser to date. The question, though, is if this new release will be enough to help Opera gain new users and market share. For now, Opera has only released the final version of Opera 10.50 for Windows. Mac and Linux versions will follow soon. You can already download beta versions for these systems here.Currently, Opera commands somewhere between 2% and 3% of the desktop browser market, which, if we look at it from a glass-half-full perspective, means that there is a lot of room to grow for the Norwegian browser developer. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market frederic lardinois Tags:#Browsers#NYT#Product Reviews#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Related Posts last_img read more

Boxing: Oscar DeLa Hoya wants to make Canelo vs Spence in near future

first_imgAdvertisement AdvertisementIn the past, Errol Spence Jr has claimed he is interested in fighting the current lineal middleweight, champion Canelo Alvarez. In recent interview Golden Boy promotion CEO Oscar Dela Hoya has said that he also wants to make that fight happen and has also called it a future ‘Super Fight’.”Absolutely, Canelo is always willing to fight the best,” De La Hoya said to Fighthub when asked if he’d be willing to fight Errol Spence Jr. ”I believe a fighter like Errol Spence Jr. can come up a couple of weight divisions and challenge a fighter like Canelo and that’ll be a super fight, but you have to come and talk to us because we would know how to stage that type of event.”Dela Hoya said that Spence would need to move up to Middleweight division for the fight to take place.Right now, it’s clear that Canelo Alvarez is the only true PPV superstar in Boxing and Errol Spence recently fought in front of a sold-out crowd in Texas and the fight was also attended by the owner of Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones. If Spence continues to raise his profile than without a doubt Canelo vs Spence will turn out to be a super fight. Also Card-Boxing: Canelo vs GGG 2 gets a solid undercard fightlast_img read more
