The company initially set up in Manchester in 2016, employing software developers and testers to support its main technology hub at its Stoke-on-Trent headquarters.Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the company said the new positions will be infrastructure roles and graduates from the University of Manchester. “This is no longer a small gathering of developers but a software development function that has matured and seen every team grow significantly with developers, testers, analysts and project managers now present,” Warren Hughes, head of systems development for Bet365, said.“As we continue to expand and look to open our fifth floor in Spring Gardens, we aim to keep the bar high and bring in people that are passionate about technology and delivery.”Meanwhile, platform provider FSB has described its switch to new headquarters in Shoreditch from next week as “a hugely salient step in [its] evolution and ambitions”.The Scrutton Street site, located in east London’s ‘tech dev’ community, will be home to more than 100 FSB staff. The company said the 8,000 sq ft offices will showcase its operational offerings and online trading tools, while a new product-development floor will also feature a fully-functioning betting shop.FSB’s business development director, Richard Thorp, said: “Shoreditch is a rich environment for tech talent, which makes it a natural habitat for FSB’s industry-leading expertise.“Milestone digital innovation and differentiation sets us apart from out rivals, so these offices provide the resources and ideal setting in which to keep our portfolio at the cutting edge.” AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Tags: Online Gambling Bet365 will hire 100 new staff members as part of a University of Manchester tie-up Email Addresslast_img read more

Q&A: Rodney Butler, chairman, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation

first_img24th October 2018 | By Stephen Carter Regions: US Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Ahead of his appearance at ICE Sports Betting USA, tribal chairman and interim CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino Rodney Butler provides his perspective on at the US sports betting and igaming landscape post PASPAiGaming Business North America: To what extent was Foxwoods prepared for the news of PASPA’s repeal? Rodney Butler: We had been closely following the development of New Jersey’s sports betting case for years, in addition to serving as members of the AGA’s Sports Betting Task Force. After the oral arguments in the US Supreme Court for the PASPA case occurred in December 2017, we had a strong feeling that PASPA was trending towards a full repeal. In preparation, we ramped up our internal education on sports betting, and in Q1 2018 we began the process to select a sports betting partner that will lead us and the entire sports-fanatical north east region of the US into this new and exciting business. What impact would the leagues’ insistence on integrity fees have on your business model with regards to sports betting? The proposed royalty fee by the leagues has no place in legislation. Sports betting has been operated effectively in Nevada without royalty fees, and to date no state has passed legislation with royalty fees for the leagues.Simply put, these fees will affect an operator’s ability to price sports markets competitively and affect their ability to compete with the massive, unregulated black market – which contains groups that don’t pay integrity fees, taxes, or have any real consumer protections in place.A royalty fee will drive the already slim sports betting margins even lower and will offer little incentive for licensed operators to invest in product and marketing, which in turn will adversely affect a trusted, regulated operator’s ability to recapture the prolific black market. In turn, this negatively influences the revenue opportunity for both the operator and the jurisdiction that derives revenue from the operator’s activity. It flies in the face of social responsibility.I don’t think there is an operator that would be averse to working with the sports leagues on something that makes sense commercially, but from a business and public policy perspective, the royalty fees don’t make sense to include in law.In reality, a market structure without integrity fees will likely be better for the leagues, which stand to profit handsomely through their existing revenue streams from a stronger, growing fan base. Should the tribes’ exclusivity agreement in Connecticut prohibit Connecticut Lottery from providing sports betting? In the case of sports betting in the USA, we believe brand trust is extremely important. We are not creating a new sports betting market, but rather we are working to recapture a large, pre-existing black market from mature, offshore unregulated operators and underground bookies.Foxwoods Resort Casino has been a trusted gaming operator for 26 years. We think it is important for strong gaming brands to serve both existing and new demand for sports wagering in a transparent, high-reputation environment. Will you be able to offer sports betting under the existing compact with the state or are there revisions that need to be made? If so, what would they be? We would work through our existing exclusivity agreement with the state, and depending on negotiations, we would collectively determine whether or not we needed any revisions. What is the appetite for sports betting in Indian Country? In general, we have been excited about the prospects for sports betting so long as tribes are treated equally and maintain some level of regulatory authority over betting. The National Indian Gaming Association has put forward a resolution supporting such and we want to be an active part of any sports betting dialogue be it at the state or national level. What is the tribe’s current stance on how sports betting should be regulated, and how does it differ from other tribes with a significant presence in other states? We support a common sense market structure that fits the business we aim to operate. Over the last two decades, the tribes in Connecticut have employed many thousands of people and funnelled over $8bn to Connecticut’s general fund, so it would be fair to say that we strongly support the constituents of Connecticut and the public policy initiatives that affect everybody living in our great state.Nevada is a fine example of how a state can structure sports betting regulations, while Pennsylvania has created what appears to be an arbitrary market structure that will do little to support the recapturing of the black market, and hinder the regulated market’s growth and sustainability. We believe that a lower effective tax rate and pragmatic regulation for sports wagering will create a strong market structure that will drive higher volume for the operators and the state. It will also allow us a better chance of eliminating the black market. I think it’s fair to say that anybody that has become educated about the economics of sports betting likely holds a similar view. What role do you believe mobile and online gaming to have and what work are you doing to prepare for its introduction should it happen? I saw a great headline recently that read, “If sports betting makes sense, online gaming makes dollars.” We agree. New Jersey is a great example of how online gaming can both drive new revenues and also produce incremental benefit to retail casinos. We support the legalization and regulation of online and retail sports betting, along with online casino gaming, to augment our guest experience, create new jobs and adapt with the ever-changing times. To this end, we have selected a partner to help us enter the online gaming market and are actively lobbying the state of Connecticut to legalize the activity. Spain’s coalition government outlines new gambling restrictions

first_img Spain’s gambling sector is set for new restrictions after the country’s coalition government unveiled its plans for the new year. Spain’s coalition government outlines new gambling restrictions Legal & compliance Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Spain’s gambling sector is set for new restrictions after the country’s coalition government unveiled its plans for the new year. The coalition government of parties PSOE and Unidos Podemos have revealed a complete programme for 2020, including ‘urgent regulation of gambling to prevent and curb gambling’.The coalition sets out six specific actions designed to achieve its target, including a regulation of the advertising of gambling and online gambling at the state level and “similar to that of tobacco products”. In 2005, Spain introduced regulations that prohibit tobacco products from sponsorship deals, as well as restrictions on advertising and promotion in the media. The government said it will introduce measures designed to reinforce the player’s self-awareness with the aim of encouraging “healthy consumption practices and to prevent, anticipate or identify the generation of problematic game patterns”.It also said it would work with regions to prevent gambling establishments from opening before 10pm and limit their proximity to schools. Gambling venues will be obliged to display a sign about the dangers of gambling at their entrances, similar to the warnings shown on cigarette packets.Administration fees collected by the government will be allocated towards “preventive, awareness, intervention and control initiatives, as well as to repair the negative effects produced by the game activity”.The government also said operators would be made to play their part in reducing problem gambling. It said: “We will promote the involvement of gambling and betting operators in the development of information, prevention, sensitisation and reparation actions for possible undesirable effects derived from gambling activity.”When plans for severe restrictions on advertising were discussed in 2018, trade group CeJuego’s director general Alejandro Landaluce said the changes “reflect a lack of knowledge about the sector”.Landaluce – whose group represents the likes of Cirsa, Codere and R. Franco – said Spain is “one of the countries with the lowest rate of problem gambling in the world”, with a rate of just 0.3%. He added that some 18% of young Spaniards are addicted to the internet while 7% of the adult population is “addicted to compulsive shopping”.In December, Spain’s regulated online gaming market reported a 5.4% year-on-year increase in gross gaming revenue for the third quarter of 2019, with the growth of online casino again supported by the recovery of the sports betting vertical. GambleAware calls for more input from experts by experience

first_img There is little evidence that those with experience of gambling-related harm are involved in discussion of the subject, according to a new report commissioned by charitable funding body GambleAware. Legal & compliance There is little evidence that those with experience of gambling-related harm are involved in discussion of the subject, according to a new report commissioned by charitable funding body GambleAware. The report from King’s College London, a review of 130 studies into gambling harm, said there was “a lack of any substantial evidence of PPIEP [patient and public involvement, engagement and participation] being undertaken within the UK gambling sector”.However, it added that rather than there being a lack of lived experience participation occurring, it may be more likely that it does exist but “is not being recorded and/or reported in a formal manner”.The research called for a “national level forum, network or infrastructure” to facilitate involvement from experts by exprience. Through workshops with those with lived experience, the report found that such a body should ideally be independent and fully funded.“Workshop participants were keen to see an adequately funded, independent initiative, separate to any run by the NHS or other bodies, as in their view, this could lead to a lack of ownership and potentially be bureaucratic,” it said.Among the areas highlighted as those in which people with lived experience wished to contribute more to the debate were self-exclusion, online safeguards, regulation and ensuring independent sources of funding for research. In addition, it said the gambling sector should “consider undertaking a priority-setting exercise to involve people with lived experience”. This would involve those with experience of gambling-related harm helping to create a list of priorities for future research. The report added that organisations such as regulators and gambling support services should create plans on how to engage experts by experiences, including the challenges that may be faced along the way. These organisations should also have a “recruitment strategy” to help reach a “diverse range of views and experiences” and should consult those with lived experience about how to facilitate further such  engagement, it said. Workshop participants highlighted the importance of flexible timings and different locations for discussions in order to allow a more diverse range of people to take part.“Workshop participants acknowledged the importance of widening participation and including people affected by gambling-related harms who are harder to reach and lack experience of engagement, rather than regular consultation with the same ‘expert’ individuals, a debate which is well covered in the literature about other sectors,” the report explained. As well as this, these organisations should hire a lead worker to focus on PPIEP.Other recommendations included one that communication with those who have experience of gambling-related harm be “timely, appropriate, accessible and constructive”, as well as one suggesting that “remuneration, reward and expenses payment policy should be in place so that people with lived experience are reimbursed as quickly as possible for their involvement and are not out of pocket due to their participation”.Marc Etches, chief executive of GambleAware, said the report highlights a weakness in the current level of engagement with those with experience of gambling-related harm.“GambleAware commissioned this research to better understand what engagement methods work best in order to successfully draw on the knowledge and expertise of those who have experienced gambling harms,” Etches said. “While the research suggests there is already some engagement with these groups, the report has highlighted a clear lack of reporting of such conversations.“The findings have shown how important it is to capture the diverse range of views available to help improve and strengthen existing research, education and treatment and prevention initiatives, while making clear that any new representative network of people from the lived experience community would need to be entirely independent.”Caroline Norrie, research fellow at the Health and Social Care Workforce Unit (HSCWRU) at the Policy Institute at King’s College London, said she hoped the gambling sector would consider the recommendations in the report.“Our research identified a number of recommendations that organisations across the gambling industry could adopt to help strengthen and improve engagement with those who have first-hand experience of gambling harm,” Norrie said.“We were also able to identify a clear set of requirements for any future forum or network to ensure participants had the right platform to share their experiences, discuss and engage in key policy and priority setting conversations.“I look forward to seeing how these recommendations are taken forward across the industry.” 1st September 2020 | By Daniel O’Boyle Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter GambleAware calls for more input from experts by experience AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Tags: Online Gambling Topics: Legal & compliance People Regions: UK & Ireland Email Addresslast_img read more

Study highlights wide-ranging risks of gambling across all levels of spend

first_img“We  find  that,  for  example,  three   years  earlier  around  half  of  the  highest-spending  gamblers  were  already gambling heavily, while only six months before, over 6.9% of these heavy gamblers were not gambling at all, highlighting the fast acceleration with which some individuals can transition into heavy gambling,” the study said. Regions: UK & Ireland These gamblers were also less likely to spend money on health and wellbeing and more likely to be socially isolated and awake late at night. “For many years, there has been a focus on outcomes among the most extreme gamblers. A new study from the University of Oxford’s Department of Social Policy and Intervention has found that the top 1% of gamblers’ deposits averaged 58% of their income. “Either of these relationships is worrying and could have implications for public health policies.” The Oxford researchers also discovered that higher levels of gambling was associated with increased borrowing, such as using an unplanned  bank  overdraft,  missing  a  credit  card,  loan  or  mortgage  payment,  and  taking  a  payday  loan. Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Topics: Social responsibility Problem gambling Responsible gambling “Analysis of banking transactions provides unique insights into the scope and sequencing of gambling harms at the individual and population levels with implications for gambling policy, regulation, and harm minimization.” The report found that the link between increased gambling and a greater mortality risk was consistent across demographics. It also suggested an association between high levels of gambling and higher risk of future unemployment, as well as with future physical disability. This was not confined to the highest spenders, the report continued. It suggested an association between even low gambling spend and negative quality-of-life effects. Study highlights wide-ranging risks of gambling across all levels of spend “To me, the striking finding is the extent to which even low levels of gambling are associated with harm,” Muggleton said. The study – led by the Department’s Dr Naomi Muggleton – also suggested there was a link between both high and moderate levels of gambling spend and adverse affects such as financial problems, risk of unemployment and social isolation. Email Address AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter While one of the report’s headline claims, that high levels of gambling are associated with a 37% increase in mortality, Muggleton looked to clarify this in her comments. The report also looked further back over the history of the players studied and found that many of the higher-depositing players rapidly increased their spend. 5th February 2021 | By Daniel O’Boyle The mean average annual net deposits across this sample base was £1,345, though the median average (the midpoint of all spend) fell to £125. This suggested averages were skewed by a small number of particularly high spenders. To illustrate this claim, the study noted that the heaviest gamblers exhibit higher five-year mortality rates. It used the example of 44 year-old women, for whom gambling 30% of annual expenditure is associated with an increased chance of death from 50 in 10,000 to 69 in 10,000. ‘The association between gambling and financial, social and health outcomes in big financial data’ purports to be the largest study of its type. It was compiled by analysing banking transactions for more than 100,000 individual gamblers at Lloyd’s Banking Group during 2018. This was then aggregated for up to 6.5m individuals over up to seven years. She stressed that the report could not say whether the association between gambling and any negative effect including increased mortality was causal. The link was a cause for concern either way, she added however.  Dr Rachel Volberg, of the school of public health at the University of Massachusetts, said the study was particularly important because of its significantly large sample size. “To date, studies of gambling harms have been limited by reliance on small samples and self-reports of behavior,” Volberg said. It went as far as suggesting an association between gambling spend and increased mortality rates. “A  10%  point  increase  in  absolute  gambling  spend  is  associated  with  an  increase  in  payday  loan  uptake  by  51.5% […] and the likelihood of missing a mortgage payment [increases] by 97.5%,” the report noted. Tags: Study Oxford University Problem gambling “Our work shows that financial distress, social ills, and poorer health are more prevalent among low level gamblers.” “It’s unclear whether gambling causes negative outcomes, or whether already vulnerable people are disproportionately targeted by bookmakers, for example through advertising and locating betting shops in impoverished neighbourhoods,” she explained. last_img read more

ATG CEO calls for lighter sanctions for self-reported failings

Regions: Europe Nordics Sweden Sweden’s gaming regulator Spelinspektionen has intervened in 46 cases of wrongdoing in the past two years, of which ATG accounts for four.
