Unless you are a true high school basketball fan, you probably don’t remember Virgil Sweet. He was the basketball coach at Valparaiso High School in the 1960’s. He is best known for the way his teams shot their free throws. They all shot exactly the same way, and they all hit them.On February 18, 1965, a young player on his team was doing what all of his basketball players did during their lunch hour. He was in the gym practicing free throws. Only this day he didn’t miss any. In fact, he made 409 straight. I don’t know how long this took, but in 1965 I am sure the teacher allowed him to complete this task without marking him late to class.Virgil Sweet was honored by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association by naming a service award in his honor. This was given each year to a person who the association felt contributed to the game of basketball around the state. In fact, I won this service award in 1998. I consider it a great honor!
