first_imgThe Yankees want another starting pitcher, and the Tigers are prepared to take full advantage of any desperation they sense from the Bronx.According to the New York Post , the Tigers have already asked the Yankees for star infielder Gleyber Torres in any deal that involves lefty Matthew Boyd. MLB All-Star Game 2019 starters: Cody Bellinger, Mike Trout lead list MLB trade news: Yankees owner afraid of what a starting pitcher may cost Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said Thursday he values starting pitching and is considering every opportunity but added he’s most concerned with what a potential deal would cost in young talent.“None of us like to give up very good young players,” he said, “but we have in years past and I think and a lot of times it has paid off, but it is always my biggest concern: What am I losing? What future am I giving up?”Asking for Torres is certainly steep, but it’s what Detroit wants if it’s to part with an impact starting pitcher under team control until 2022. According to MLB.com, Detroit’s asking price for Boyd is “believed to include multiple impact prospects, similar to what the White Sox received from the Cubs for Jose Quintana two years ago with similar years of control remaining.”To recap that Quintana deal from 2017 — the White Sox received two top-100 prospects, including outfielder Eloy Jimenez, and two other players from the Cubs. It’s nearly unimaginable that the Yankees would part with Torres, and Detroit probably knows that, but you can’t blame the Tigers for shooting for the moon early in negotiations. Boyd is in the middle of a career season with a 5-6 record with a 3.72 ERA in 17 starts so far in 2019. He has struck out 129 and walked 20 in 101 2/3 innings pitched and should make his first All-Star team. However, Torres, who is still only 22 years old, is also a virtual lock for his second All-Star appearance as he’s batting .291 with 19 home runs and 47 RBIs.
