A group assault of two RCMP officers in La Ronge was captured on someone’s phone — and investigators are asking anyone with the footage to come forward. The incident took place around 1 a.m. on Aug. 23, after La Ronge RCMP received a request from a homeowner for help “in removing several unwanted guests from a residence,” RCMP said Thursday in a news release.Several people complied with the officers’ instructions to leave. According to RCMP, while the two officers were assisting an intoxicated guest who was not under arrest, another man assaulted both officers. After being told he was under arrest for assaulting a police officer, the man ran away but was stopped by the officers, leading to “further struggle to the ground as the male resisted the arrest.”While police were placing the man in custody and attempting to handcuff him, “several unknown people began to physically assault the officers,” RCMP said.According to police, other people were using a phone to film the entire incident, which lasted approximately 10 minutes. After both officers were struck multiple times, one of them drew a conducted energy weapon (CEW) — commonly referred to as a Taser — to create space between the assailants and the officers. The CEW was not deployed, RCMP said. The man was arrested without further incident. He appeared Aug. 23 in La Ronge provincial court on a charge of assaulting a police officer.RCMP say video footage taken of the incident “is crucial to helping identify the persons responsible for the assault of the two police officers.”Both officers received medical treatment and remain on light duties as a result of injuries suffered during the incident, RCMP said.
