© 2012 Phys.Org (Phys.org) — A Bill has been introduced in Washington to stop employers and schools from demanding access to people’s social network accounts. On Friday, Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) presented SNOPA, which stands for the Social Networking Online Protection Act. Under SNOPA, employers can’t ask current workers or new job applicants for access to their social networking accounts. If employers ignored the ruling they would pay $10,000 as civil penalty. The ban on such information demands would also apply to schools. They would be forbidden to ask for social networking log-in information, to support their decisions on enrollment or discipline. The SNOPA ruling would extend to all school levels, from colleges and universities down to K-12 schools. The move to introduce the Bill follows reports that employers are asking applicants for information so they can access applicants’ Facebook accounts as part of the interview process. Ostensibly the hirers justify this as wanting to see if the person is a team fit and capable of showing the right kind of behavior within the job’s professional setting. Demands are also placed on present employees. A case in point involved a teacher’s aide in Michigan who was fired after she refused to hand over her Facebook password to supervisors. Their demand had followed a complaint by a parent on the aide’s Friend list who found a photo objectionable. Those backing the legislation say it’s a disturbing trend. Engel said there were “countless examples” of employers requiring an applicant to divulge user name and password as part of the hiring process. “A person’s so-called ‘digital footprint’ is largely unprotected,” he said in a statement.Such infringements, say SNOPA backers, also infringe on other protective shields. Viewing a social networking site may reveal applicant information that is not allowed to be up for consideration at the time of the interview, such as religion or sexual orientation.Facebook would welcome such a bill. Facebook has called attention to a “distressing increase” in password-demand cases in the United States over the past few years. While there is no federal law yet to remedy the issue, a number of voices on the state level have expressed dissent over coerced access. Maryland is in the front lines seeking to ban the practice. As an example of concern, the Maryland Department of Corrections was requiring access to applicants’ Facebook pages to view profiles, as part of screening those seeking work in jails, and looking for possible illegal activity and gang affiliations. One such instance involved a former corrections officer wanting to be recertified for his job following a leave of absence. He complied, as an interviewer roamed his private messages, pictures, and posts. The Department, however, has revised its policy and asks only for voluntary participation to view profiles. According to an AP report, the corrections department last year assessed 2,689 applications. Out of the 2,689, seven candidates were rejected in part because of information found on their social media profiles. Another candidate was rejected solely because of content on a profile. That candidate, along with others, used social media profiles that had images of them showing gang signs.A bill that would protect against bosses viewing employee passwords awaits signature by the Maryland governor. Citation: Researchers develop simple way to fabricate micro-supercapacitors with high energy density (2017, July 3) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2017-07-simple-fabricate-micro-supercapacitors-high-energy.html Explore further Stretchy supercapacitors power wearable electronics In a new study, researchers have developed a simple “one-step method” for fabricating micro-supercapacitors and demonstrate that the final devices exhibit a very good overall performance, including a high power density (1500 mW/cm3) as well as an energy density (11.6 mWh/cm3) that is at least twice as high as similar micro-supercapacitors. The researchers, Han Xiao et al. at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have published their paper in a recent issue of ACS Nano.”We have developed a versatile, simple and effective method for fabricating high-energy micro-supercapacitors with designed shapes,” coauthor Zhong-Shuai Wu at the Dalian National Laboratory for Clean Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told Phys.org.The essential step of fabricating the new micro-supercapacitor is integrating phosphorene nanosheets into the interlayer of graphene nanosheets, and the good performance is in large part due to the synergistic combination of these two materials. The different materials have complementary effects, with the phosphorene offering a high storage capacity and preventing the graphene sheets from unwanted stacking, while the graphene forms the main skeleton and offers a high-speed electron transport network.Among their other characteristics, the micro-supercapacitors demonstrate very good flexibility, which the researchers attribute to the layered structure and planar device geometry. The device also has a high capacitance, which is maintained at nearly 90% of its maximum capacity after 2000 cycles. In general, the simple fabrication process also contributes to improving the device performance because it avoids the contamination and oxidation that often occur during multiple-step processing. As the researchers explain, the small energy-storage devices have the potential to be used in a wide variety of areas.”Micro-supercapacitors are very promising for on-chip energy storage,” Wu said. “Very recently, the emergence of wearable and smart electronics urgently call for highly flexible and multi-functional, integrated energy storage devices. Overall, new micro-supercapacitors could keep up with the pace of the fast development of high-tech microsystems used in the precision instruments, materials, bio-medical and other fields.”The researchers also expect that, in the future, the new fabrication process can be easily scaled up and eventually be used for commercial purposes. They also plan to investigate other materials and techniques for developing microscale energy storage systems.”We are continuously developing a variety of ultrathin, structurally defined graphene and 2-D materials, safe high-voltage electrolytes, and device fabrication techniques for flexible, smart, and integrated microscale energy storage device systems, such as high-energy micro-supercapacitors,” Wu said. © 2017 Phys.org (Phys.org)—One of the most promising microscale power sources for portable and wearable electronics is a micro-supercapacitor—they can be made thin, lightweight, highly flexible, and with a high power density. Normally, however, manufacturing these devices involves complicated techniques that often require high pressures, irradiation, and multiple steps. Kolkata: The soured relationship between Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and his wife Ratna took its ugliest turn with the latter organising a sit-in demonstration in front of Mayor’s apartment at Southern Avenue. Ratna started the agitation since late Thursday night alleging that her husband has been refusing to sign documents for her daugther’s visa, who is scheduled to leave for Germany. The husband wife duo has been living separately since November last year after Mayor filed a divorce petition at Alipore court. Ratna started the sit-in demonstration accompanied by her daughter at around 1 am on the footpath infront of Chatterjee’s residence claiming that the latter has got a chance to visit Germany in connection with a school project and he refuses to sign visa documents. “I have been trying to contact Sovan numerous times but he has been avoiding us. His signature is required on some documents, so that my daughter can avail the visa,” Ratna said. Chatterjee shot back questioning the authenticity of the documents on which Ratna is demanding his signature.”I am being blackmailed and forced to sign on some documents that are not meant for my daughter’s Visa. I am the city Mayor and have to adhere to some international protocol. I cannot sign on any anything or everything,” Chatterjee said.He further questioned: “Why should I not sign on the my daughter’s documents? Do you think 1 am is the time when somebody would come to sign documents?”He maintained that as a divorce petition is pending before the court, he has to follow court order before taking any step. Later at around 10 am in the morning, on the basis of Mayor’s complaint, his wife was arrested by Rabindra Sarobar police station and later released on bail. Ratna on Friday afternoon lodged a complaint with the police station that some persons had heckled her while she was peacefully agitating infront of Mayor’s residence.

If consumed in moderation and accompanied by a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, coconut oil is great for the body, skin and hair, say experts. Myth: Coconut oil causes heart diseaseFact: Coconut oil is as far as possible from being harmful to your heart’s health. The reason this myth was perpetuated was because of its large percentage of saturated fat. Advanced research has proved that naturally occurring fats don’t damage your heart. Instead processed foods and those containing large quantities of refined sugars and high fructose corn syrup are making heart troubles widespread. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfMyth: It tastes coconutyFact: Coconut oil comes in two variants: Refined and virgin/cold pressed – and not all varieties have a coconuty flavour. Refined coconut oil has literally no taste or odour, these are often refined, bleached, and deodorised so that they can be consumed easily. However, hydrogenated coconut oil should be avoided at all costs as the process can create synthetic trans-fats. Go for coconut oil that has been refined using a natural and chemical-free process. And if a slight coconut flavour in your food doesn’t make it unpalatable for you then opt for the virgin variety. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveMyth: Coconut oil has high cholesterolFact: Coconut oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides which are a super fuel used up by our bodies very efficiently. In fact, they contribute towards a better cholesterol profile. This means that either your overall cholesterol levels go down or your good cholesterol levels go up on substantial consumption. It’s the ratio of your total cholesterol to your good cholesterol that determines how healthy you really are.
College going boys who often attend parties or go to bars for drinks are more likely to be sexually aggressive compared to those who do not, says a new study. “We found that it wasn’t alcohol use, per se, that leads to sexual aggression,” said Michael Cleveland, Associate Professor at Washington State University. “But the combination of alcohol and the setting that the drinking takes place in had a major impact on the number of reported aggressive tactics used,” Cleveland added. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfA group of over 1,000 college males participated in a survey for the research. The survey was conducted by email or online. “We asked them how often they drank and if and how often they went to bars or parties,” Cleveland said. “Then we asked if they used any specific tactics to convince, or even pressure, women to have sex with them,” he added. Those tactics ranged from threatening to break up with her to getting her drunk and harming her physically. The findings also showed that more the male students reported drinking as freshmen, the more likely they were to commit a sexually aggressive act. The study further found that the men who went to bars and parties more often tended to have higher levels of impersonal sexual orientation, characterised by a preference for sex without commitment and a greater number of sexual partners than the ones who do not party.
During an at bat in yesterday’s Indians/White Sox game, Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer and Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia talked more trash to each other than you might see during a pick up game at Rucker Park.Garcia wasn’t happy with the pitches Bauer was throwing him, which has to be a first, and let Bauer know it. Bauer was annoyed with the complaining, and after When Garcia stepped out of the box after fouling of another pitch, Bauer motioned for him to get back in and take his medicine.Bauer ended up finishing off Garcia with a strikeout, and after the K, motioned to the dugout for him to have a seat. This at bat breaks every unwritten rule in baseball, and it’s awesome.Full video of Bauer/Garcia. You can see Garcia chirp immediately. You can even create price alerts that ping you when the products go on sale.5. Flaviu Negrean Talk to Me: FreeToday’s economy is global, and this affects all companies of all sizes. Unless your team includes several multilingual individuals, having a conversation with a client in French, German, or Chinese is pretty tough while holding an English to French–or German or Chinese–dictionary. One option is to try a translator application such as Talk To Me. This app uses Google Voice Recognition, Translate, and Text-to-Speech to translate among English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Chinese, and Japanese. Just speak into the phone and the phone talks back in the selected language. No more flipping through pages of language guides, listening to French tapes in your car, sitting through Chinese classes, or investing in products such as Rosetta Stone. Talk To Me and other apps like this could soon change the definition of multilingual.See this PCWorld story for more about Android apps, visit the PCWorld AppGuide, or check the Android Market site. 5 min read
Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Register Now » July 2, 2012 Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. If you operate a website, you’re no doubt familiar with search engine optimization. Now, add “social optimization” to your to-do list.A website that’s optimized for social media sharing typically attracts more traffic and sparks more engagement with customers. But what does social optimization mean exactly? Is it simply a matter of adding social sharing buttons to pages? Actually, it encompasses everything from encouraging more sharing on your pages to seeking more feedback from visitors. To make your website more social, consider these five tips for going beyond buttons:1. Encourage a more social experience. There is a belief that people either share or they don’t. Not so. You can encourage sharing and engagement on your website by choosing “emotionally intelligent words.” This means you select words that represent the personality of your brand and appear conversational.A good example would be changing a “Try it now” link to “Ready to give it a whirl?” This evokes an action and also makes the click more of a personal experience for the user. Making it personal, in turn, can help users feel more comfortable about leaving a comment or sharing on your site.Related: A New Tool for Adding Facebook Features to Your Website2. Raise the bar on content quality.Creating distinctive content that your customers find interesting and useful is, of course, key to any successful online marketing strategy. Without such content, there’s less chance that your pages will be discovered and linked to by other sites.Improving the quality of your content is one way to make your site more social. Think about it. Are you creating articles, blog posts or videos that are worth sharing? For example, make sure your titles are enticing. Be sure to integrate your sharing buttons closely with the pieces of content.Content format and length are also important. Infographics, videos and concise blog posts are generally shared more often than long, in-depth pieces because they’re easily and quickly digested. That’s especially important with the growing number of mobile-device consumers.3. Incentivize when possible. By incentivizing your visitors with gamification features such as badges, counts and stars, you play to an innate need to compete and win. Ask yourself what can be tweaked on your site to incentivize sharing. Maybe it’s something as simple as ratings or voting. One example of successful incentivizing is ModCloth’s “Be the Buyer” program. The online vintage clothing retailer invites shoppers to vote on which outfit the company should sell next. Customers are also encouraged to promote the outfit to friends to get more votes. If an outfit gets enough votes, ModCloth will carry the outfit. This program encourages shoppers to check back often, increasing site visits and potentially boosting sales. The shoppers are rewarded by being able to buy an outfit that isn’t carried anywhere else. It’s a win-win.Related: How to Create a Search-Friendly Website4. Actively seek customer feedback. When was the last time you asked your visitors what they wanted to see next? Whether it’s asking them to vote on the next feature you build or to choose a product they’d like to see you sell, don’t underestimate the power of feedback. Crowdsourcing on your site can help encourage users to be social both with you and each other. An example comes from conversion and retention analytics company KISSmetrics, which spent its first year asking customers which metrics they needed and where they should go in its app. By relying on customer feedback, KISSmetrics was able to meet customer expectations throughout its platform. This approach helped increase customer retention and the likelihood of future feedback, as well.5. Track diligently and make adjustments. You might believe that some brands are just more likely to win in social engagement than others, but that is rarely the case. Success often comes down to a more strategic process of testing and making adjustments. To boost engagement on your site, test such factors as where sharing buttons go and which kind of messages encourage customer interaction. Most sites have Google Analytics or other research tools, but few are using them to track social media traffic and better understand how people are engaging on their site. Simple changes such as using more direct language can often boost social activity.Businesses that refuse to test and adjust their social optimization strategies will find that engagement can quickly fizzle and competitors will gladly connect with their former fans.Related: 5 Ways to Master Social Media Multitasking 4 min read Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.
