The UK government has appointed Lord Michael Williams of Baglan to the BBC Trust, the broadcaster’s governing body.Williams will be the first BBC Trustee to take on an international role as part of his responsibilities. This will reinstate a position on the BBC’s governing body with specific oversight of the BBC’s international public services, including the BBC World Service. He will chair a new BBC Trust committee to monitor the international public services, which also include BBC World News and BBC Monitoring.Williams was most recently the UN special coordinator for Lebanon and an under secretary-general of the UN. He is also a former special adviser to two former UK Foreign secretaries and special adviser to the United Nations secretary general on the Middle East. A former editor at the BBC World Service, Williams has also been a trustee of the BBC World Service Trust.
German cable operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG) has issued a €300 million bond.The company will use the net proceeds of the five-year bond, set to mature in 2017, to partially replace the €600 million in bridge financing it has raised for the planned acquisition of Tele Columbus.
Rob TobiasRob Tobias has been named as president of HDMI Licensing LLC, the group that leads licensing, compliance, enforcement and marketing initiatives for the HDMI specification.Tobias was previously president of the MHL Consortium and a senior director at Silicon Image – now Lattice Semiconductor – where he was involved in the development of HDMI semiconductors, IP products and the company’s wired interface roadmap. He was also vice chair of the marketing working group for the HDMI Forum, the group tasked with developing future versions of the spec.“With over four billion HDMI-enabled devices shipped to date, HDMI connectivity is the leading solution for consumer electronics products.
